Etrog Citron (Citrus medica) – A Sacred & Fragrant Citrus

Does not ship to Florida

The etrog citron is a rare and ancient citrus fruit known for its religious significance, intensely fragrant rind, and striking appearance. Most famously used during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, this unique fruit also makes a fascinating and aromatic addition to any citrus collection.

Botanical Profile:

  • Common Name: Etrog Citron

  • Botanical Name: Citrus medica

  • Type: Evergreen citrus tree

  • Mature Size: 8–15 ft tall (can be kept smaller in containers)

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)

  • Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil

Cold Hardiness:

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 9–11

  • Cold Tolerance: Sensitive to frost; can tolerate temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C) briefly, but prolonged exposure below 32°F (0°C) may cause damage.

  • In cooler climates, grow in containers and move indoors or to a greenhouse during winter.

Fruit & Harvest:

  • Fruit Appearance: Bright yellow when ripe, thick, bumpy rind with an elongated or oval shape. Many have a “pitom” (blossom-end protrusion), which is prized for religious use.

  • Flavor: Very aromatic, with a thick rind and dry, acidic pulp. Not commonly eaten raw but excellent for candied peel or preserves.

  • Bloom Time: Spring to early summer

  • Harvest Season: September to November, depending on climate

  • Time to Fruit: Typically 2–3 years after planting (from grafted nursery trees)

Care Tips:

  • Protect from wind and frost.

  • Water deeply but infrequently; allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Fertilize regularly with a citrus fertilizer during the growing season (spring through early fall).
