Growing Citrus with Murphy Citrus Nursery

Are you looking to grow your own citrus fruits at home? Look no further! This blog post will guide you through the process of growing citrus the right way. From selecting the perfect location to harvesting your juicy fruits, we've got you covered.

Choosing the Right Location

The first step in growing citrus is selecting the right location. Citrus trees thrive in sunny, well-drained areas. Make sure your chosen spot receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day and has good air circulation.

The Soil

Most citrus will grow in most types of soil. Heavy clay soils can be a problem so try to avoid those. Keep in mind that extremely sandy soils will require more frequent watering and fertilizing than heavier soils.

Planting Your Citrus Tree

When planting your citrus tree, make sure to dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Gently loosen the roots before placing the tree in the hole. Fill the hole with water and then pull the soil back into the hole. We call this mudding it in. Be sure to push the mud all the way to the bottom and work your way up to the top of the hole. This technique helps prevent air pockets in the root zone, which can be harmful to your tree. Water thoroughly after planting.

Caring for Your Citrus Tree

Proper care is essential for the health and productivity of your citrus tree. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, and fertilize with a citrus-specific fertilizer. Prune your tree as needed to maintain shape and promote fruit production. It's best to remove the fruit, in Spring, for the first year or two to allow the tree to strengthen and grow.

Harvesting Your Citrus Fruits

Once your citrus tree starts producing fruits, it's time to harvest. Citrus fruits are best when fully ripe, so wait until they are firm, colorful, and fragrant before picking. Simply twist the fruit off the tree or cut it with pruners.

By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to growing delicious citrus fruits right in your own backyard. Happy growing!
